Electric Fencing
6th April 2010
Good quality fencing, walls or hedges are essential if you want to keep livestock where you want them to be. Electric fencing has many uses and it is quick and easy to erect and move around as and when requried.
An electric fence can be used to keep cattle, horses and pigs in a particular area, or to keep dogs, rabbits, foxes and deer etc out. The electric shock that is given to animals is harmless, but it is memorable enough that they wil not continue to attempt to pass through the fence again.
Electric Fencing is usually operated off a 6 or 12 volt battery, or off a mains electricity supply. Battery, mains or solar power is converted into pulses of electricity by an energiser. Energisers are available from around £50 to hundreds of pounds, depending on your requirements. The cheapest units are powered using a couple of D sized batteries, which will last a couple of months, 24 hours a day and can power around half a mile of fencing. The more expensive energisers will power much longer lengths of fencing, and will offer day and night economy modes, lighting protection, monitoring of fence status and much more.
With an electric fence there is no need to strain the wire or to use large posts. Thin lightweight stakes can be used with insulators. The wire is wrapped loosely around the insulators and on in a loop around the required area. The live wire should be around hip hight for cattle, but higher for horses, or at about one foot off the ground for pigs.
Electric fencing is not very effective with sheep, but can be used. A more elaborate fencing design is requried mixing live wires at 10, 17, 26 and 36 inches.
